A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in public works. They were built at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
