Sam Fender has donated the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound honor winnings to the trust for venues, which operates to protect the UK's small live music spots.

He was given the prize on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was declared the best record of the past year.

The musician has chosen to hand the money over to the trust, in recognition of the vital role grassroots venues fulfilled in his early career.

"I personally wouldn't be doing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the performances I played around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," said the artist. "These venues are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, at least 150 of these locations have shut down – approximately 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, major artists including Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by applying a modest fee to their ticket prices, which supports smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also joined in, generating in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help numerous grassroots venues across Britain.

The money assisted locations that were confronting possible closure due to difficulties caused by floods, fires and bereavements, as well as permit problems, court cases and sound issues.

Some locations received monetary aid in modernizing facilities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and concertgoers.

"The idea that revenue from performances in big venues supports the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has commented.

He is among several artists to contribute his Mercury Prize prize money to charitable organizations.

Back when Pulp won the award in the mid-90s for their record Different Class, frontman Jarvis Cocker declared that the band would contribute their cash to the organization the charity.

In 2002, musician she split her award among multiple good causes, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I gave a grand to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was growing up and they required updated gear," Ms Dynamite explained to a publication.

Previously, Ezra Collective gave their winnings to the youth organization that developed their act, alongside other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients the group gave their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was diagnosed the disease.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," remarked artist the singer. "The money was the extra but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our winning touched somebody else's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had saved a couple of grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under local control.

The Joiners in that area and the other in the city were purchased under the community ownership program, which is supported by the arts council and supporters who buy "stakes" in the buildings.
